Mission Santa Barbara Rose Garden

While we were staying in the Mission Canyon neighborhood, we took some time to visit the Rose Garden at Mission Santa Barbara. 



Although we've been to the Mission several times, we're not typically in Santa Barbara during the time when many of the roses are in bloom. There were so many varieties, I couldn't begin to capture all of them. These were some of my favorites:

    Check out the rose garden on Chico State's campus! It's behind the iconic bell tower building. It's not huge, but the number of varieties is pretty cool.

      My favorite rose is Angel Face...both for its beautiful lilac color and the incredible fragrance. Gotta love a two-fer.

    I agree with Heraclitus (circa 500 BCE): "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." True with many (most?) places, situations, relationships, etcetera including rose gardens, as your stunning photos show. <3

  This post is a little window into the lives of the family of Giovanni Impellizzeri and Maria Antonina Trovato of Alcamo, Sicily, Italy. Giovanni is John's 2nd cousin, 3 x removed (there are also more distant cousin relationships, but this is the most direct). Pictured in the photo are Giovanni and Maria Antonina, center, surrounded by their 8 children: back - Mariano, Antonino, Giacomo; center - Sebastiana, Giovanni, Maria Antonina, Liboria; front - Andrea, Vittina, Rosalia. I discovered Giovanni and his descendants through researching the Alcamo Impellizzeri line and via DNA testing. Giovanni's granddaughters, Marie Impellizzeri and Mary Ann Impellizzeri are DNA matches with John, his 4th cousins, 1 x removed. Christmas Card 2024

Buon Natale - Merry Christmas! It's our first year not sending any holiday cards, and probably not receiving any either. Very understandable, given our living situation, but it still makes me a little sad. I know I'm in the minority here , but I still love the tradition of sending and receiving cards during the holiday season. It's a lovely - and increasingly rare - experience to receive a handwritten note from special people in one's life.  So, this year I find myself reverting to a 'virtual' format. I hope you enjoy our photos and updates, and I hope to hear from you. Happy Holidays! John Probably you all know that this has been a rough year for John, with two surgeries, three transfusions, and months of rehabilitation stays, after falling and fracturing his femur in June. Celebrating Sixty: Birthday Cruises with Cousin Gerlyn

  Last year in anticipation of our upcoming 60th birthdays, cousin Gerlyn and I decided to plan a river cruise together. This was a new type of cruise experience for both of us, and we began researching the best cruise company and itinerary for our first attempt. Since Gerlyn has Hungarian ancestry (in the line we don't share), we wanted to begin or end in Budapest. We settled on a company called Viva and booked our cruise on the Danube River. Gerlyn would be flying all the way from the US West Coast, so we thought it would be a good idea to add an additional travel experience. We decided on a cruise with MSC in the Adriatic Sea, and John would meet up with us to join in on that cruise to reunite the Travel Trio.  We hit two snags. First, after booking the MSC cruise, we received word from Viva that the ship we were to be on, which was a new build, would not be ready in time for our cruise.
