Costa Smeralda Summer 2026 and Vanchella Family News

I made a decision to book a last-minute cruise in June after I realized that we won't have the opportunity to travel together again as a family (Team Sierra!) for quite some time. There is a good reason and a bad reason for this. On the good side, Emily, having completed her very long training program, is beginning her career with Costa Cruises. On the bad side, John is facing some big medical procedures soon. More on both later.  Since I was booking about two weeks out, and I did not want to deal with flights and hotels, I had just a few choices. There were two MSC cruises, one from Messina and one from Palermo. I do need to cruise with MSC again soon, because I have (finally!) reached Diamond level, and the status goes away after a certain period if one doesn't cruise again. There was also a Costa cruise out of Palermo. After considering the prices, room options, and itineraries, we decided to go with the Costa Smeralda cruise out of Palermo. This was our itinerary.  ...

-

Friends Rob and Steve, and their friend Brenda (our new friend) decided to visit Sicily at the end of their most recent travels. We were excited to see them again in person after having met in March 2022 on Regal Princess , our Transatlantic cruise to begin our retirement exploration. It's nice on those rare occasions to meet people you feel a connection with, then build and maintain a friendship. We had so much fun reconnecting! We met playing trivia. Rob reminded me that it was 80s trivia. Cousin Gerlyn was part of the gang on that cruise After consulting, Steve and Rob decided to spend two nights in Palermo, three in Capo d'Orlando, and two in Catania. I went to meet with them for part of their time in Palermo, then we had fun spending time together in Capo. While they were here, I arranged for a day tour on the eastern side of the island.  (Note: I've written in several other blogs about Palermo, including many of our stops. You can search "Palermo" at my bl...

For my last birthday, John and I took a river cruise on the Danube, round-trip from Vienna, with 3 days in Vienna, pre-boarding. The cruise went to Budapest, Bratislava, Melk, and Linz, including a sail through the beautiful Wachau Valley. Last year, I took a Danube cruise with my cousin Gerlyn to celebrate our 60th birthdays. Some of the places on this trip were repeats, but they were all places that I was happy to re-visit for additional exploration. There were also new places - additional stops in Austria, as well as my first visit to Slovakia. (For this blog, when I share something that I wrote about more in-depth in last year's blog, I will place a * to indicate that you can go to the link <above> for the previous blog for more information, if you're interested). Our trip started off rocky when we almost missed our flight from Palermo because of unexpected construction and traffic. They were making the last call as we approached the gate, and we only made that bec...
