This blog post is an expansion of the Tringali line (which becomes Fareri through the female ancestors in this line). Rosaria Tringali was the spouse of Domenico Ciacchella (4th great-grandparents), so it's also a type of expansion of the Ciacchella line descendants. I discussed the direct Ciacchella line expansion in this
blog post.
Tringali
In terms of Rosaria Tringali, when
I last researched, her direct ancestor tree was the one above. I had been thwarted by lack of access to Augusta church records (since they are not online). However, with new access this year to Augusta church records, I have been able to expand my research. (As a reminder, my access restricts what I am able to share here in terms of actual records.)
My first task was to search for the marriage record of Rosaria's parents, Sebastiano Tringali and Lucia Fareri. As you can see from the tree above, I had some information on Lucia (garnered from her death record, which allowed me to move back a few generations). However, there was little information on Sebastiano.
Sebastiano Tringali, son of Domenico Tringali + Rosaria Manco, married Lucia Fareri, daughter of Sebastiano Fareri + Concetta Prato, 8 December, 1819, in Augusta, Sicily.
I found their marriage record fairly quickly, but there was a problem. The parents on Sebastiano Tringali's death and marriage records did not match. This is a problem I've experienced before, and I've learned that we have to assume that the marriage record is correct, because documents have to be provided at the time of marriage, whereas at death, the names are derived from memory of the witnesses who provide the information. This correction was helpful, as I was now able to go back some generations for Sebastiano. So...
I next identified Sebastiano's parents' death records.
Domenico Tringali, 84 years old, wife of Rosaria Manco, born in Augusta, of profession salinaro, son of Carmelo Tringali and Pasqua Gianino, died 14 May 1844.
Rosaria Manco, widow of Domenico Tringali, 75 years old, daughter of Sebastiano Manco and Giuseppa Passanisi, died 6 June 1855.
Domenico Tringali + Rosaria Manco 4 November 1792 marriage, Augusta, Sicily (one of the records I cannot share right now). His parents are Carmelo Tringali + Pasqua Gianino, and her parents are Sebastiano Manco and Antonia Farina.
You might have noticed that for Rosaria Manco, the mother does not match on the marriage record and the death record. I have to go with Antonia Farina as her mother. Unfortunately, a search for the marriage of Sebastiano Manco and Antonia Farina did not yield any results. So, for this branch, we are at the end of the line for now.
In contrast, I had more success expanding the line of Domenico Tringali. However, before going on to share my findings, I would like to discuss DNA matches that I was able to solve after having identified this couple and some of their additional children (siblings to our Sebastiano Tringali), through which the DNA matches descend.
Children (plus their spouses) of Domenico Tringali + Rosaria Manco. The 3 newly identified sons are Carmelo, Giuseppe, and Gaetano, who are John's 3rd great-uncles.
Carmelo Tringali, spouse of Gaetana Quattrocchi, son of Domenico Tringali and Rosaria Manco, died, age 36, on 22 October 1831 in Augusta, Sicily.
Carmelo Tringali married Gaetana Quattrocchi, 3 January 1819 in Augusta, Sicily.
A couple of interesting points to note. First, Carmelo died quite young. From his death record, his estimated birth year is 1795 which is consistent with the marriage date of his parents. As well, his name follows Sicilian naming conventions. You may have noticed that Gaetana's mother is a Tringali, so it's possible they may have been some level of cousin. To answer that might take quite a while (amplified by the fact that Tringali is a super common name), so it will have to remain an unanswered question for now.
There are two DNA matches that I was able to verify through Carmelo.
Louis Delzampo yearbook photo. He is John's 5th cousin, sharing 23 cm on 1 segment. I was able to find a photo of someone further back in Louis's line.
Louis' grandmother, Vincenza di Domenico. She is John's 3x2 cousin.
The other DNA match is Nicholas Travaglini. I wrote about him in the
5th great-grandparent blog, because he is also a cousin (6th) through the maternal line of Giuseppe Ciacchella (Moschitto-Barbarino-Amato). The shared DNA of 8 cm on 1 segment probably reflects the Tringali line, since they are slightly less distant cousins in this line (5th 1 x removed). Or it could reflect some other relationship I haven't figured out yet!
Giuseppe Tringali is the second son I identified. There are 3 DNA matches I was able to resolve. One is new, and the other two are now related to John 3 ways!
Giuseppe Tringali, son of Domenico Tringali and Rosaria Manco, was baptised 30 September 1804.

Giuseppe Tringali, 24 years old, son of Domenico Tringali and Rosaria Manco, married Maria Pustizzi, 28 November 1828 in Augusta, Sicily.
William Goldschmidt, 5th cousin 1x removed to John. They share 10 CM on 1 segment. I was able to find a few additional pictures in William's line.
Rose Serra, William's grandmother, 4th cousin 1x removed to John.
Domenico Tringali, 2nd cousin 3x removed to John. He was born in Augusta and came to the States around 1910. To me, he definitely resembles people in the Ciacchella line. Cousins, what do you think?
Catherine DiMare, and her aunt Linda, are the "repeat" cousins in this line. They are 5x1 and 5th cousins to John, respectively, and I wrote about them in the 5th great-grandparent blog, link above. So far, they are related 3 different ways.
These are Linda DiMare's parents, Joseph DiMare and Josephine Marino. John is related to Joseph two ways and Josephine one way. Maybe we will uncover more?
Gaetano Tringali is the third son that I identified. I was able to find records for his birth, death, and two marriages. There was one new DNA match in this line.

Gaetano, son of Domenico Tringali + Rosaria Manco, was baptised in Augusta, Sicily, March 1803.
Gaetano Tringali, marinaro, aged 80, of Augusta, spouse of Carmela Spinali, son of Domenico Tringali and Rosaria Manco, died 28 August, 1880.
The DNA match, username vbastedo1, is John's 4th cousin, 1 x removed. I was unable to identify her name. She and John share 43 cm, across 2 segments, which seems high for this level of relationship. I suspect that, in addition to being related through her grandmother Carmela Tringali, she and John may also be related through her grandfather, Sebastiano Barbarino, whose surname is common in John's tree. But that's a question for another day. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any photos of people in this line; I did find a photo of the headstone of the match's grandparents.
Returning now to the expansion of the Tringali line. From Domenico's marriage record, I now knew that his parents (John's 5th great-grandparents) were called Carmelo Tringali and Pasqua Gianino, so I was on the hunt for records for them. Unfortunately, I was unable to find their marriage record in my new set of church records. However, I was able to locate death records for both of them.
Carmelo Tringali, spouse of Pasqua Gianino, died 16 March 1802 in Augusta, Sicily.
Pasqua Gianino, aged 70, widow of Carmelo Tringali, and daughter of Sebastiano Gianino + Maria Petrarca, died 2 December 1829.
Because I couldn't find their marriage record, and Carmelo's death extract does not list his parents, I'm at the end of the line for this direct Tringali branch. However, Pasqua Gianino's death record had some information that I could follow up on. I was able to find the marriage record of her parents, which included the names of their parents.
Sebastiano Gianino, son of Rosario Gianino + Giuseppa Mento, married Maria Petrarca, daughter of Giuseppe Petrarca + Italia(?) Baffo, 20 February 1740 in Augusta, Sicily.
This part of my research (on Pasqua Gianino) yielded a new set of 6th great-grandparents and two sets of 7th great-grandparents. Yay! I was also able to find two siblings of Pasqua Gianino in the Augusta church marriage records. In the photo above, Maura Gianino married Paolo Poli in 1774, and Pietro Gianino married Francesca Pugliares in 1780.
With the identification of 5th great-grandparents Carmelo Tringali + Pasqua Gianino, I was able to resolve a few more DNA matches. My research identified two additional children of Carmelo and Pasqua, a daughter Rosaria and a son Sebastiano. The DNA matches are through Sebastiano.
Sebastiano Tringali, aged 55, marinaro, spouse of Maria Moschitto and son of Carmelo Tringali and Pasqua Gianino, died 6 March 1829 in Augusta, Sicily.
This newly identified son of Tringali-Gianino, Sebastiano, revealed 7 double DNA matches. All 7 are also matches in the Ciacchella line, as Sebastiano's granddaughter Rosa is married to Giuseppe Bussichella from the Ciacchella line. I discussed all of them in the Ciacchella direct line blog, and their relationship is actually closer there (in this line they are 5th cousins and beyond), so the DNA estimates probably reflects the Ciacchella relationship. However, there is another twist in this branch. Sebastiano's wife is a Moschitto, which is the surname of John's grandfather Giuseppe Ciacchella's mother. We may discover later that they are related another way!
Here is the updated, most recent tree for the Tringali line, based on research discussed above.
Fareri
Here is Lucia Fareri's tree from when I finished the Ciacchella 5th great-grandparents project and at the start of this project.
Unfortunately, for this portion of the tree, the new marriage records didn't yield anything. I wasn't able to find the marriage records for Antonino Fareri + Domenica Poli or for Pietro Fareri + Filippa Giangrande. Nor was I able to find the marriage record for Giuseppe Prato + Lucia Pinto. Boo.
Despite this, I was able to complete some more work in this part of the tree. First, using naming conventions and the church marriage records, I identified another child of Antonino Fareri + Domenica Poli, Pietro Fareri. I also found two children for this couple, Antonino and Gaetano, which might prove useful in the future.
Pietro Fareri, son of Antonino Fareri + Domenica Poli, married Giovanna Manco in Augusta, Sicily, 26 February 1783.
Second, I was able to identify an additional sibling for Lucia Fareri. He was unmarried, so it doesn't yield much in terms of descendants, but it was an interesting find, nevertheless.
Giuseppe Fareri, son of Sebastiano and Concetta Prato, born about 1804, died 25 December 1862 in Augusta, Sicily.
Third, while I was working this part of the tree, I took the opportunity to look at any DNA matches extending from Antonino Fareri + Domenica Poli. It's always interesting to me to look at family resemblances.
There were 4 DNA matches, all descending from Antonino and Domenica's son Mauro Fareri.
John Farugia is John's 6th cousin. They share 12 cm across 2 segments.
I was also able to find a photos of Tina Annino, John Farugia's mother, and Thomas Farugia, his brother, who are also distant cousins.
John LaValle is John's 6th cousin. They share 12 cm on 1 segment.
Carolyn Page is John's 6th cousin. They share 16 cm on 1 segment.
I was able to find a photo of Carolyn's mother, Christina Fareri Ortiz.
For the last match, Barbara Schiavone, I was unable to find any photos of her or anyone in her family. She is John's 5th cousin 1x removed, and they share 9 cm on 1 segment.
For the other pair of 5th great-grandparents, Giuseppe Prato + Lucia Pinto, there was only 1 resolvable DNA match.
Francesca Conforte is John's 6th cousin. They share 8 cm on 1 segment.
This is Francesca's daughter April. I wrote about Francesca's infamous father Joe Conforte in
this blog.
In terms of records research, I was able to identify another child of Giuseppe Prato + Lucia Pinto.
Filadelfo Prato, son of Giuseppe Prato + Lucia Pinto, widower of Pasqua Greco, died 3 September 1840, Augusta, Sicily.
Well, that's a wrap on this portion of my project delving deep into the Augusta church marriage records. Now that I've completed the lines related to Sebastiano Ciacchella (paternal great-grandfather), I'll next take up the maternal side of Giuseppa Moschitto's (paternal great-grandmother) lines - Moschitto and Barbarino. See you next time!
It's amazing how the surnames in your tree are the same ones in my family. I don't know how you find the time for all this research.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the information. Now I have to update my tree. Should keep me out of trouble for a while.
I hope all are well. Stay safe.
Hehehe, glad I could keep you busy. Well, genealogy is my hobby (i.e. obsession, LOL), so it's fun - the ultimate puzzle! It really helped me reduce anxiety and keep my mind occupied during the early days of the pandemic. You know how focused you get when trying to figure something out. Yeah, those Augusta family lines cross and reappear. I'm sure that you and John will turn out to be related in more than the one line we've identified. Hope your year is off to a great start!
